Low fat ice cream is no longer an oxymoron.
My food strategy is this: Eat what you want, just eat less. I don't like sacrificing quality and until now, low-fat meant not-so-good. There are exceptions: A good sorbet (Dreyer's Whole Fruit is my favorite), Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. But for that full-on richness, it had to be full fat, until now.
Haagen-Dazs has introduced Haagen-Dazs Light, a line of half-the-fat ice creams that are stellar. I have tried three flavors so far.
Vanilla Bean is the weakest of the three. It is creamy and smooth but the flavor is chemical.
The other two are fabulous: Dulce de Leche and Cherry Fudge Truffle are exploding with clean, pure flavors, well-balanced and sweet but not overly sweet. The Cherry Fudge Truffle has sizeable chunks of very nice chocolate and dark, sweet cherries. The Dulce de Leche is full of thick caramel. The texture of both flavors is rich, smooth, and creamy. It's not overly airy, like some low fat products. These two get an A+.
Now, it should be noted that half the fat doesn't mean it's a nightly snack. Haagen-Dazs is already a high-fat ice cream, so half-fat is still pretty calorie-intensive. A half-cup serving of the cherry-truffle is 230 calories and has 7 grams of fat, 3 of them saturated.
(By the way, Haagen Dazs has no nutrition information on their website. Some may scowl, but really, what would be the point? It's ice cream.)
