Here in the Valley, who ties ties anymore? Answer: Some of us. Some of us wear one every day.
There are plenty of articles on how to tie a tie. This is the advanced course and today’s subject is: Length.
Length is key. You want the point of the tie to overlap your belt buckle. Tying with that level of precision is tricky and some days, I found myself re-tying it over and over again. I finally came up with a trick.
When you get the length just right, wait until you come home and before you remove the tie, hold the wide end of the tie where it enters the knot. Untie the tie, keeping track of that spot as you unravel it. Now use a needle and thread and install a stitch an inch or so below that point. This should be the point where the knot began. You want the stitch to be on the back side (on the seam) of the wide end of the tie, where you cross the narrow end to begin your knot.
Next time you wear that tie, find the stitch and start your knot with that point once again crossing the narrow part of the tie. Eventually all your ties will have the secret stitch and you’ll get the length right every time!
Nerdy? Sure. But not as nerdy as wearing your tie so it comes halfway down your fly.
